Scrolling vs. Success

How much time are you spending on social media? Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives, not only personally, but also in the way we conduct ourselves in business as professionals. But how much is too much? Do you have healthy limits set for yourself?

Setting limits for leisure scrolling is imperative to your success, both in life and in business. As mentioned in our previous blog, we know that the over-use of technology has been positively linked to numerous psychiatric disorders, including higher rates of anxiety and depression. In addition to that though, it’s not difficult to see that too much scrolling is also a huge waste of our valuable time. One of the first topics that I often work on with my business start-up clients is Time Management, as it is imperative that they take charge of their time in order to efficiently and effectively manage their businesses. How often have we scrolled mindlessly for what feels like 30 minutes, only to look up at the clock and realize that 2 or 3 hours have passed before we knew it. That time is precious seconds, minutes or hours that could have better spent writing their business plan, working on their marketing strategy, or doing key industry research. …Not to mention what being sedentary does to our physical health. But that’s a topic for another day!

So where do we find the balance? A few minutes of mindless scrolling can be harmless and even provide you with a chance to unwind after a busy and stressful day, while you reconnect with friends and family. However, if you want to take charge of your day you must be the master of your time. So, what does that look like? The fun thing about this is that you can play around with ideas and decide what will ultimately work best with your time, and your personality. Since everyone has different personalities, different responsibilities, and different goals, there is no ‘one-size fits all’ for your personal time management strategy.

Here are just a couple of examples:

  1. Set a reasonable limit for yourself when it comes time to your social media use and STICK TO IT! That includes having both a daily maximum and an official start and stop time.

  2. Let the technology that you use, work for you instead of against you. Set an alarm on your phone to notify you when your limit is reached. If you have an iPhone, turn on the usage analytics feature that notifies you when your usage averages have increased or decreased.

  3. Reward yourself when you have spent more time on focusing on and making progress toward the goals that you set. Have fun with it. When you have successfully hit your time management targets for a week straight, reward yourself with an extra hour on the weekends, or buy yourself that new outfit you’ve been wanting.

Having routine is both healthy and wise. You won’t be disappointed when you are living that life and running the business that you always dreamed of!
