Tips to Decrease Political Anxiety

Is Political Anxiety a real thing? According to a study by the American Psychological Association, 57% of Americans say the current political climate is a significant source of stress in their lives. Below are a few tips to help decrease anxiety surrounding politics and the upcoming election:

1. Give yourself a digital detox!

While it is good to be a well-informed citizen, we now have an endless stream of news filtering it’s way into our minds 24/7 via our electronic devices. Feasting on this information constantly can actually create more stress, and feel both overwhelming and exhausting. Try unplugging for a specified period of time; and when you return to scrolling be mindful to set healthy limits for yourself.

2. Practice mindfulness!

The scurried pace of our lives, along with being plugged in constantly to this fast-paced world keep us constantly outside of the present moment. Slow down, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to come back to the present moment. Take note of what’s around you, “smell the roses,” and practice grounding techniques such as taking off your shoes and walking on grass. Remember, the present moment is the only place that changes can actually be made. You cannot change the past and you cannot live in the future.

3. Try a little Ecotherapy!

Take a short stroll outside in nature (phone-free if at all possible!). Nature is a powerful healing tool! The power of fresh air, sunshine and exercise should not be underestimated in the healing process. The sun hitting your skin helps produce Vitamin D, which is associated with numerous health benefits; and exercise, even an a moderate pace, will produce endorphins that make you feel better and improve overall wellness!

4. Connect with friends outside of social media!

When is the last time you met up with friends or family outside of your favorite social media platforms for dinner or a movie, or just to hang out and talk? We are hardwired for intimate connection; the kind that social media in unable to provide.

5. Get involved to make a difference!

Gandhi said it best; “Be the change you want to see in the world!” If the current state of our nation is not appealing to you, join a cause and make a difference! Campaign for the candidate you choose, or fight for the change you want to see. A single person, touching a single life can indeed create a ripple effect.
